Volubilis
The best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa, a stunning archaeological site set against a backdrop of rolling olive groves.
Volubilis (Walili in Arabic) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most important Roman site in Morocco. Located near the holy city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, it was once a remote outpost of the Roman Empire.
The site is famous for its remarkably well-preserved mosaics, which still sit in their original locations. Walking through the Decumanus Maximus at sunset, with the columns silhouetted against the Zerhoun mountains, is one of Morocco's most evocative experiences.
